Laser hair removal uses a beam of light to heat the pigment in hair follicles. The heat damages the follicles so fewer hairs grow back. At Uplifting Medi Spa, we offer it at our New Braunfels and Spring Branch clinics for areas like the underarms, legs, bikini line, upper lip, and back. Most people need a series of sessions, and the results last a long time, though some hair can return and need a touch-up.

Every plan starts with a consult. We look at your skin, your hair color, and the areas you want treated, because those decide whether laser is a good match and how your provider sets the device.

How does laser hair removal work?

Melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color, absorbs the laser light. That heat travels down into the follicle and damages the part that grows new hair. The skin around it absorbs less of the light, which is why the contrast between your hair and skin matters so much.

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles that are actively growing at the time of treatment. That is why one visit is never enough. Each session reaches a new group of follicles as they move into the growth phase.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The FDA lets laser devices claim "permanent hair reduction." That means a lasting drop in the number of hairs that grow back, not zero hair forever. Many people see a large reduction after a full series, and the hair that does return is often finer and lighter.

Hormone changes can wake up new follicles over the years. Pregnancy, menopause, and conditions like PCOS are common reasons. Some people come back for a maintenance session once or twice a year.

Who is a good candidate?

Laser works best on dark hair, because dark hair has the most pigment for the light to target. Blonde, red, gray, and white hair has little or no pigment, so laser usually does not work well on it. If your hair is light, we will tell you that at your consult instead of selling you a series that won't help.

Skin tone matters for safety. Light skin with dark hair is the easiest match. Darker skin can still be treated, but it needs a wavelength and settings suited to darker skin, because the skin's own pigment also absorbs light. Your provider checks your skin type before your first session and adjusts the settings to match.

When to wait

We may ask you to postpone treatment if you are pregnant, have a fresh tan or sunburn, or have a rash or skin infection in the area. Tell us if you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past several months, take a medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, get cold sores in the area, or have a history of keloid scars.

Which areas can you treat?

The most requested areas are the underarms, bikini line, legs, upper lip, chin, back, chest, and arms. A small area like the upper lip takes a few minutes. Full legs or a full back take longer, and your provider will give you a time estimate when you book.

How to prepare for your appointment

Stop waxing, plucking, threading, and sugaring the area about four weeks before your first session. Those methods pull the hair out at the root, and the laser needs the root in place to work.

Shave the area a day before your visit. Hair left above the skin can scorch on the surface and make the treatment less comfortable.

Stay out of the sun and skip tanning beds and self-tanner for a few weeks beforehand. Tanned skin holds more pigment, which raises the risk of burns and dark spots. On the day of treatment, come with clean skin and no lotion, deodorant, or makeup on the area.

What a session feels like

Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap, like a rubber band against the skin, followed by brief warmth. Many lasers cool the skin as they work, and we can apply numbing cream to sensitive areas first.

Aftercare and side effects

Redness and small bumps around the follicles are common for a few hours to a couple of days. A cool compress helps. Over the next one to three weeks, treated hairs shed, which can look like regrowth at first.

Between sessions, shaving is fine, but don't wax or pluck. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen on treated areas and keep them out of the sun.

Less often, laser can cause blistering, crusting, or lighter or darker patches of skin. These are usually temporary, and scarring is rare. The risk is lowest when the settings match your skin type and you have avoided the sun before treatment. Call us if anything worries you after a session.

How many sessions will you need?

Most people need several sessions, often four to eight, spaced about four to eight weeks apart. Face sessions are usually closer together than body sessions because facial hair cycles faster. Your provider will set the schedule based on the area, your hair, and how you respond.

What does laser hair removal cost?

The price depends on the size of the area and how many sessions your plan includes. We go over the total for your series at the consult, so you know the cost before you start. You can also ask when you book. If you'd rather spread out the cost, we offer payment plans through Affirm and Cherry. See our payment options.

Common questions about laser hair removal

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people feel a quick snap and brief warmth with each pulse. Sensitive areas like the upper lip and bikini line tend to feel stronger, and numbing cream can help.

How long does a session take?

Anywhere from a few minutes for the upper lip to about an hour for large areas like full legs.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes. Shaving leaves the root in place, so it does not interfere with treatment. Avoid waxing, plucking, and threading during your series.

Does laser hair removal work on blonde, red, or gray hair?

Usually not well. Those hair colors have little pigment for the laser to target. We will tell you honestly at your consult whether laser is likely to help.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin?

It can be, when the provider uses a wavelength and settings suited to darker skin and checks your skin type first. Bring up your skin history at the consult so we can plan safely.

When will I see results?

Treated hairs shed within a few weeks of each session. Most people notice slower, thinner regrowth after the first few sessions, with the full result after the series is complete.

Is IPL the same as laser hair removal?

No. IPL uses a broad range of light wavelengths, while a laser uses a single wavelength aimed at a specific target. At Uplifting, we use IPL mainly for sun spots and redness. Our IPL photofacial guide covers that treatment.
