A lot of people come to us in the fall with the same question. Summer is over, the sun spots look darker than they did in spring, and they want to know whether an IPL photofacial will help. At Uplifting Medi Spa, we offer IPL treatments in New Braunfels and Spring Branch. For the right skin, IPL does a good job on brown spots and redness with very little downtime.

IPL is not the right tool for every skin type or every spot, so a consult comes first. This article is educational, and results vary.

What an IPL photofacial is

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. A laser uses a single wavelength. An IPL device sends out a broad range of light in short pulses, and filters narrow it toward the target. Pigment in sun spots and the blood in small visible vessels absorb that light and heat up. Over the next few weeks, your body clears the treated pigment and vessels.

Photofacial is the common name for IPL on the face. IPL can also treat the neck, chest, and hands, which often show as much sun damage as the face. Ask about those areas at your consult.

What IPL can help with

IPL tends to do best with sun spots and age spots, freckling from years outdoors, general redness, small broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks, and the flushing that comes with some rosacea. Many patients say their skin tone looks more even overall once a series is done.

The light also gives collagen a mild push, so some people notice slightly smoother texture. Texture is a side benefit, though, not the main reason to choose IPL.

What IPL does not treat well

Melasma is the big exception. It is a hormone-driven pigment that can darken with heat, so we are cautious with IPL there and often suggest other approaches first. Deep wrinkles, loose skin, and acne scars need different tools. For texture and firmness, we usually talk about microneedling or Morpheus8. If your skin mostly needs a deep clean and hydration, a HydraFacial may be a better place to start.

Who is a good candidate for IPL?

You may be a good fit if you have lighter to medium skin, visible sun spots or redness, and no current tan. IPL works by finding the contrast between a spot and the skin around it. When the surrounding skin holds more pigment, from a naturally deeper skin tone or a recent tan, the light has a harder time telling the two apart, and the risk of burns or new dark spots goes up. Our nurse practitioners and clinical team check skin type closely under Dr. Jennifer Upton's clinic approach. If IPL is not a safe match for your skin, we will say so and suggest another option.

Who should wait

We may ask you to wait, or choose a different treatment, if you have a tan or recent sun exposure, use self-tanner, are pregnant, take medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, have an active infection or cold sore in the area, or have a history of keloid scarring. Some antibiotics and acne medications raise light sensitivity. Share your full health history and every medication you take, including retinoids, so we can plan timing safely.

Why fall and winter are a good time to start

Texas summers make IPL harder. Treated skin needs protection for a few weeks, and fresh sun exposure before a session raises the risk of side effects. Starting a series in the fall lets you finish over the cooler months, when you are spending less time on the Comal or the Guadalupe.

What a session feels like

Your provider cleans your skin and gives you eye protection to wear the whole time. A cool gel may go on to protect the skin. Then the provider moves a handheld device over each area, one pulse at a time. Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap, a bit like a rubber band, with a flash of warmth. A session usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many areas we treat.

What happens after IPL

The first few days

Redness and mild swelling are common for a few hours. Brown spots usually turn darker over the next few days, a little like coffee grounds on the skin, then flake off within about a week to ten days. That darkening is expected. Let the spots shed on their own instead of scrubbing them. You can usually wear makeup the same day and go back to your normal routine right away. Your provider will give you aftercare instructions before you leave.

Sun protection

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and avoid direct sun and tanning during your series. New sun exposure can bring spots back and raises the risk of side effects.

We keep a few options in the Uplifting shop that fit different preferences after IPL:

Your provider can help you pick one at your visit.

How many sessions you may need

Some people see a change after one visit. Most get their best result from a series of three to six sessions, spaced about three to four weeks apart. IPL does not stop the sun from making new spots, so many people come back for maintenance. Your provider will suggest a schedule that fits your skin.

Common questions about IPL

Is IPL the same as a laser?

No. A laser uses one wavelength of light. IPL uses a broad range of filtered light, which lets one device treat both brown spots and redness. Your provider chooses the settings for your skin.

Does IPL hurt?

Most people feel a mild snapping or stinging with each pulse. The cooling gel helps, and most patients find it easy to tolerate.

Is there downtime after IPL?

Very little. Expect some redness for a few hours and darker spots that flake off over about a week. Most people go straight back to work.

Is IPL safe for all skin types?

No. IPL is generally safe for lighter to medium skin types, but deeper skin tones carry a higher risk of burns and pigment changes. We assess your skin at the consult and suggest another option if IPL is not a good match.

Can IPL treat melasma?

Melasma can get worse with heat, so we are careful with it. IPL is often not our first choice for melasma. We will talk through other options at your consult.

How much does IPL cost?

It depends on the areas treated and how many sessions you need. We give you pricing at the consult, based on your plan.

Do you offer IPL in New Braunfels and Spring Branch?

Yes. We offer IPL photofacials at both our New Braunfels and Spring Branch clinics.

Book an IPL consult
