People come in after months of trying diets that work for a while and then stop, or after a primary care visit that mentioned GLP-1 medicines by name. At Uplifting Medi Spa, we offer weight management with GLP-1s in New Braunfels and Spring Branch. We decide fit with you in consult after we review your history, goals, and whether a prescription plan makes sense.
This post is educational. Results vary. GLP-1 medicines are not right for everyone. A consult is required before treatment.
What are GLP-1 medicines for weight management?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. These prescription medicines act on pathways that help regulate appetite and, for some people, blood sugar. Semaglutide is one medicine in this class. People often know it by brand names such as Ozempic or Wegovy when those are clinically appropriate.
A standard GLP-1 is not always the best fit. Sometimes a dual agonist (often called a GLP-2 option in clinic shorthand), such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro or Zepbound), or a triple agonist such as retatrutide, is more appropriate for appetite control or how your body responds. We fit the medication to you after consult. We do not start every patient on the same shot.
At Uplifting, weight management sits inside a broader plan. That usually includes diet and activity guidance, the medicine that fits, and appropriate supplements chosen to support your body's own GLP-1 production where that makes sense. The injection alone is not the whole plan.
What happens during a GLP-1 visit?
Consultation
The first visit is a conversation. We ask about your weight history, what you have already tried, medical conditions, medications, and what you want to change. We review whether a GLP-1 is a reasonable option for you or whether another path fits better first.
Your plan
If you are a candidate, we build a plan that covers which medicine fits, dose, injection schedule, supplements, and what we will check on follow-up. Cost and insurance questions get covered in plain language before you commit.
Weekly injections
GLP-1s used for weight management are usually given as a subcutaneous injection once a week. Common sites are the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. We teach technique and timing so you can do this safely. Some people start with clinic support and then continue at home once they are comfortable.
Follow-up
We monitor how you feel, how your weight is changing, and whether side effects need a dose change or a pause. Plans adjust. You are not locked into the first dose forever.
Who may be a good fit?
You may be a reasonable candidate to discuss GLP-1 weight management if you have struggled to keep weight off with diet and activity alone, are open to a medically guided plan, and can commit to follow-up.
We may recommend waiting, or another path, if your history raises safety questions, if another medical issue needs attention first, or if lifestyle changes alone are the better next step. Our nurse practitioners and clinical team evaluate fit under Dr. Jennifer Upton's clinic approach. If a GLP-1 or related medicine is not the right tool, or if a different agent fits better than the first idea, we will say so.
What people often hope to improve
Clients commonly come in wanting steadier appetite control, fewer cravings, and support for gradual weight loss that holds. Some also have type 2 diabetes and are already talking with their doctor about blood sugar. Early changes in appetite often show within the first few weeks. Fuller weight change usually takes consistent weeks on a plan. We set expectations from your history and goals, not from marketing claims.
FAQ
How soon will I notice changes?
Many people notice appetite or portion changes within the first few weeks. Weight change is slower and varies. Consistent follow-up and the rest of your plan matter as much as the injection.
Do the injections hurt?
Most people describe a brief pinch. We show technique and site rotation so the process stays manageable week to week.
What side effects are common?
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are the side effects people report most often. They are often mild and ease as your body adjusts. Tell us about anything that is strong or lasts, so we can adjust the plan.
Do you only use semaglutide?
No. Semaglutide is one option. We may recommend a dual agonist such as tirzepatide, or a triple agonist such as retatrutide, when that better matches your history and goals. We combine the medicine with supplements aimed at supporting your own GLP-1 production when that is part of the plan.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Medicines such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, and related options are prescription-only. We evaluate history and fit in consult before any prescription.
Will insurance cover it?
Coverage varies by plan and by whether the medicine is prescribed for weight management, diabetes, or both. Check with your insurer. We can help you think through questions to ask them.
